Getting the most out of planning a family vacation to a winter destination.
Winter vacations can be an incredible experience, especially if it's a well-planned trip. Whether you live somewhere that's warm all year or you live in the mountains themselves, there's just something special about a vacation to a winter destination. In this post I will touch on some of the important details to planning a winter destination getaway that will help your trip go as smoothly as possible. FYI, one tip I would give off the bat: If you have little to no experience in snowy winter mountainous locations, it would be wisest to work with a travel agent, like us at Landscape Travel, that knows the ins and outs of winter travel and how best to plan a winter trip.
Tip #1: Understand that FLEXIBILITY is 100% necessary!
When you are traveling into an area where winter exists, it means winter exists! LOL! That means that snow storms could possibly occur and delay flights or shut down airports. It means roads could be impassable due to snow and high winds, with some roads even being shut down. It could very well mean that ski lifts have to close for a period of time due to high winds. With winter you just never know, so just be mentally prepared to be flexible. *This is a good time to mention the benefits to purchasing trip insurance, so that even if your plans change you don't have to loose money!
Tip #2: If you are flying to your destination and renting a vehicle, you need to check the requirements for 4-wheel drive/all-wheel drive or chains on passenger vehicles. Just because a rental car company is located in a winter location doesn't mean they will inform you of the law. To be on the safe side, go ahead and reserve the 4-wheel drive!
Tip #3: Choose your winter weather attire wisely. Not all winter clothes are created equal. As a general rule of thumb, the more you pay for higher end winter fabrics, the more quality you'll be getting. For example, wool socks truly wick the moisture away from your skin, allowing your body to stay warmer because your feet are warmer. Another rule of thumb, just because a coat is thick and fluffy doesn't mean it will keep you warm. Again, it's vital to check the materials the coat is made from. If you have questions regarding winter clothing, it's a great idea to visit your local ski or outdoor sports store. You can also visit the online stores of many great outdoor gear companies to read about the different products they offer.

Tip #4: BUY TICKETS AHEAD OF TIME! Whether you're planning to go snow tubing, downhill skiing/snowboarding, or even snowmobiling, it's best to purchase tickets before your trip. This will guarantee you the spot on the mountain you're looking for, plus you can often get discounts by purchasing tickets online. It's a win-win!
Tip #5: ENROLL IN LESSONS! I cannot stress this tip enough, especially if it's your first time skiing/snowboarding. While these sports are incredibly fun, they are also dangerous and require a certain level of skill. Keep in mind that if you attempt to get out on a ski hill with no experience, not only are you risking hurting yourself but you're also putting all the other skiers at risk too because you're on the hill. Lessons can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as several days in length, that is up to you. Most ski areas offer group lessons as well as private lessons. Check with your destination to learn more and register for lessons.
Taking a vacation during the winter can create very special memories for your family. Being prepared before the trip begins is the best way to ensure an amazing experience. Working with a travel agent that knows your specific destination also works to help ensure a smooth trip. So grab your gloves and goggles and start planning YOUR winter destination vacation today!
