As I sit on the front porch overlooking my Colorado ranch on a cool summer evening, my taste buds are on vacation.....at The Fish House in Key Largo, Florida! I can seriously taste the fresh Mahi right now!
After spending many years as a chef on private yachts, I love to go in search of the best local food everywhere I go. The Florida Keys is no different. However, what DOES make the Florida Keys different is how unsuspecting an incredible restaurant may appear from the outside. The Fish House in Key Largo is just such a place. If you didn't know any better you might just drive right on by and never give it a second look.
It doesn't seem to matter what time of year or what day of the week you visit, The Fish House is always hopping. During my most recent visit early this Spring, we thought perhaps it would be ok this one time to go for dinner without making a reservation because it was midweek during a slower time of year....oops, that was not the case. There was a bit of a wait, but the bartender was more than happy to serve us a glass of wine and we lounged outside in the ample seating until we were called.
The restaurant itself isn't very large, but it's most definitely vibrant and lively, with quite the eclectic array of nautical decor that you definitely won't ever find anywhere else. The menu is filled with a delicious assortment of locally caught fish prepared in several different ways. (You'll find the list of the day's fresh fish selection outside the restaurant.) Stone crab is also another guest favorite. The Fish House is also famous for desserts, so be sure to leave room!
Next time you find yourself on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo be sure to make it a priority to stop in and see what all the fuss is about. Your taste buds will be glad you did!
